Understanding the Nervous System

The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) controls bodily functions not under our conscious control such as the beating of our hearts and the fluctuation of hormones. It is divided into two systems, the sympathetic and the parasympathetic.

The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) can be seen as the Yang or active energy. In a threatening situation, the sympathetic nervous system triggers the release of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol. Our heart rate increases, our brain becomes instantly conscious and aware and our digestion diverts blood to its large muscles. This is our "fight or flight" response.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) can be seen as the Yin or passive energy. Once the system no longer sees a situation as a threat, the PNS decreases heart rate, relaxes blood vessels and clears metabolic waste products such as adrenaline and lactic acid. The parasympathetic system repairs and rebuilds the body after exposure to stress.

The more we are stressed, the more energy it takes our bodies to recover. This vicious cycle leads to such diseases as a weakened immune system, migraines, frequent headaches, repetitive strain injuries, backaches or peptic ulcers. The body is out of balance. It then struggles to re-balance by finding ways to slow us down. Here are some ideas for re-balancing your system and finding peace:

Imagine that you are on the bank of a river and that your thoughts are the river going by. Don't try to stop the river, just watch it. Within a week, you will see the river begin to slow down. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes. You may find that you fall asleep because you are so relaxed. That's good because, in many ways, you have begun to let go. Continue at this pace and each day allow just alittle more time for yourself to meditate. Doing this allows you to relax and forget about time.

Geranium helps to release anger and negative memories. It can be used for to calm and clarify any situation. Inhaling geranium can ease anxiety and tension on both a mental and physical level.

Jasmine benefits almost any nervous condition. This oil encourage self confidence, optimism as it diminishes fear. Jasmine dissolves emotional blocks.

Lavender is often called the universal oil, because you can use it for so many things. It is analgesic, anti-coagulant, anti-convulsive, anti-depressant, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, anti-toxic, cardiotonic, and is a sedative. It has a very balancing effect on the body, emotions, mind and spirit.

Myrrh oil fortifies the emotions and the nervous system. Historically known as a sacred oil, its smell is distinct and provides us with clarity, focus and strength. This oil centers our emotions, subdues anger and inflamed emotional states.

Peppermint oil is another essential oil that has a wide variety of uses. It is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, is invigorating, and cooling. It helps to disperse anger, depression and fatigue. It can also be used in the treatment of shock. It enhances mental alertness, and is stimulating to the conscious mind.
