Jyotisha meaning “light or heavenly body“, and is the traditional Hindu system of astrology, also known as Hindu astrology, Indian astrology or Vedic astrology. The “Vedanga Jyotisha” is one of the earliest texts about astronomy within the Vedas. Jyotisha has been divided into three main branches:

Siddhānta: Indian astronomy, calculating the position of the planets and other heavenly bodies. Hindu calendar (Pānchānga) is created from that calculation. ‘Siddhāntā Sirómāni’ and ‘Sūryā Śiddhāntā’ are two main books on Hindu astronomy. According to this theory, the earth is motionless and it is not considered as a planet. Seven planets (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) revolve around the earth.

Samhitā: Mundane astrology, predicting important events related to countries such as war, earthquakes, political events, financial positions, house and construction related matters (Vāstu Śāstra), animals, portents, omens, and so on. It is also concerned with the calculation of Sūbhā Mūhūrtā for Brātā, pārbā and Sānskārā.

Horā or ‘Jātakā’: Predictive astrology where the astrologer makes predictions about future events in a person’s life based on a birth chart (Jānmā kūndāli) which records the exact time of birth and the positions of the planets at the time.

India’s astrologers read the predictions from the moon sign (which is the sign the moon was in at the time of your birth). Also, your “ascendant” is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your time of birth (aka your rising sign). Vedic astrologers call the ascendant the Lagna. It is determined by your time of birth.

Western astrologers use the sun (Tropical zodiac) signs, based on the Sun and seasons. India’s Vedic (Sidereal zodiac) signs, base their calculations on the stars and constellations. The planets move across this back drop and determine what sign the planets are in.

Astrological Planets

There are 9 planets in Vedic astrology. Precious and semi precious stones have power as good receivers of these planet’s energies and are associated with each one. Also, each planet signifes a specific body system/organ and influences them. To Vedic astrologers, the planets represent basic drives and impulses within the human psyche. These drives express themselves as different qualities throughout the twelve signs and in different cycles of life through the twelve houses. How exactly the planets manifest themselves also depends on their relationship to each other in the sky as seen from Earth. The patterns that the planets make in the sky reflect the ebb and flow of basic human impulses, just like the moon.

Sun Signs

The sun signs are the 12 signs of the zodiac. This system of astrology, which considers only the position of the Sun at birth, places one “personality” within one of the twelve zodiac signs.  Also called your “star sign”  this basic twelve-fold division relates the current movements of all the planets to each other, using traditional rules to divine meanings for each sign separately. Because the Moon has the fastest apparent movement of all the heavenly bodies, it is often used as the main indicator of daily trends for sun sign astrology forecasts.
